Say Goodbye to Dark Spots: Skincare for Underarms & Elbows
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Uneven skin tone in areas like the underarms, elbows, and knees is a common concern. These dark patches often result from friction, shaving, or dead skin buildup – but with the proper care, they can be safely brightened for a smoother, more even look.

If you are having trouble with this, don’t worry-you’re not alone. The good news is that with proper and consistent care, you can solve this problem.

Check out this complete guide to brighten those areas safely and naturally.

Why Do Certain Areas Become Darker?

There are various causes why certain areas become darker, and it’s essential to know the causes for the proper treatment of your body

  • Dead skin cell buildup as a result of not exfoliating
  • Repeated friction from tight clothing, shaving, or physical activity
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation from shaving or waxing
  • Hormonal changes, especially during pregnancy, or the effects of using contraceptives
  • Lack of hydration and moisture
  • Use of deodorants or products containing alcohol or perfume

Basic Care You Need to Do

1. Exfoliate Regularly

The most basic step to brightening your skin is to remove dead skin cells by using a gentle scrub made with natural ingredients like sugar and honey or coffee and coconut oil 2-3 times a week.

You can also use a mild chemical exfoliator containing AHA (glycolic acid, lactic acid) or BHA (salicylic acid) to help regenerate skin.

2. Use Brightening Products

Several active ingredients have been proven to help brighten skin; these ingredients include:

  • Niacinamide (Vitamin B3): Brightens and moisturizes
  • Alpha Arbutin: Inhibits excess melanin production
  • Vitamin C: An antioxidant that improves skin tone
  • Licorice extract: Soothes skin and reduces pigmentation

Be cautious with ingredients like hydroquinone without a doctor’s prescription, as they can cause irritation or adverse long-term effects.

“Pigmentation in the creases of the body is most likely temporary and can be addressed with gentle exfoliation, proper hydration, and the use of active ingredients like niacinamide and AHAs,” said Dr. Michelle Wong from Lab Muffin Beauty Science.

3. Avoid Products That Cause Irritation

If you shave often or use deodorants with high alcohol levels, you might be making irritation and dark spots worse. Opt for alcohol-free, fragrance-free, and paraben-free formulas to keep your underarms calm and healthy.

4. Maintain Skin Moisture

Dry skin will appear duller and rougher, especially around the elbows and knees. Use a moisturizer containing shea butter, ceramides, or glycerin to keep your skin hydrated. It’s best to use those products every time after showering and before bed.

5. Use Sunscreen Even Inside the Room

Believe it or not, UV rays can still penetrate through thin clothing. Moreover, when wearing sleeveless shirts or shorts that expose your underarms and knees, be sure to use broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher on these areas.

Brightening areas like your underarms, elbows, and knees isn’t about drastically changing your skin tone, but instead restoring its natural color for a healthier look.

A combination of exfoliation, hydration, sun protection, and the right active ingredients will yield maximum results if done consistently.

As Dr. Melynda Barnes, a New York-based dermatologist, said, the key to even, radiant skin is not an instant whitening treatment, but relatively consistent, gentle care.

However, if home treatments don’t work, you can consult a trusted dermatologist for further guidance. They may recommend you do chemical peels or lasers for specific pigmentation.

There’s no need to be ashamed of your skin tone – what matters is that you treat it well and with love.

So, are you ready to feel more confident from head to toe?
